Supporting your child with speaking and listening
Communication is the key to your child understanding and being part of the world around them, and is crucial to their development and learning in school. Children develop an ability to communicate with others from an early age, and this continues as they learn to make their needs known, put words together, form sentences, take part in conversation and understand and use new vocabulary.
You can help your child on this journey by talking to them about the world around them, explaining what you are doing, asking them what they are doing, introducing them to and explaining new words, sharing stories together and listening to what they have to say to you.
If you have any concerns about your child's speech please don't hesitate to speak to their class teacher.
Below are some ideas of activities that you can share together at home to develop your child's speaking and listening skills.
